Optimizing a website and performing search engine optimization (SEO) is the practice of streamlining the content and setup of a website to make it easier for search engines to categorize and define a website. Proper SEO allows search engines to identify more correctly when your website is relevant to a person’s search. SEO also allows the website to achieve better search engine rankings and results, when properly optimized. The better a website or page ranks on a search engine, the more visible it is. The more visible the website is, the more likely it is to attract large amounts of visitors and traffic. The more traffic a website receives, the more likely the website is to convert those visitors into customers and increase profits.

Here is a list of usable search engine optimization techniques to consider, when marketing and advertising your website online. Boost traffic to your website by implementing as many of the following SEO techniques as possible.

Search engines are machines that read the code of your website. They do not “see” images and movies, but they do read words. The most beautiful website in the world is useless, if a search engine cannot read it, categorize it, and being referring traffic to it.Make sure every page of your website is properly labeled with a Title tag. The Title tag should very directly and succinctly describe exactly what is to be found on each page. Include keywords for the particular page in the Title tag.Design your navigation hierarchy to be easy to follow and easy to read. Do your best to use text based navigation on your site. Make sure all of the navigation links are correct and do not lead to missing pages.Always provide a link back to your home page from every page on your site. Usually, this is accomplished by including a “Home” link in the site’s navigation.Text or content is what the search engines and your visitors use to learn about and understand your website. Make it a goal to consistently provide quality, fresh, compelling, keyword rich ad copy on the pages of your website. In most cases, one word searches are too broad for finding specific products and services, so it stands to reason that this is not the way that people search. People search with keyword phrases, because phrases describe more specifically what the person is searching for. For example: someone would not simply search for automobile, when they are searching for information regarding a 2010 Mercedes-Benz S-Class automobile. Be sure to include specific, relevant keyword phrases in the text of your website.Write your text or ad copy in natural speech. Write the content, as if you were personally greeting every visitor to your website and describing to them what your website was about. Imagine how ridiculous it would be, if a person asked you what your website was about, and all you did in reply was repeat the word shoes over and over again. It is the same with the content of your website. It must speak to the search engines and your site visitors on your behalf. Search engines and visitors are able to judge whether or not your text copy flows naturally, or is simply an attempt to stuff as many keywords into the shortest amount of space possible.Link building essentially sums up all forms of internet marketing. Seek out as many opportunities to have other websites, pages, and blogs build backlinks to your website as possible.Interlinking pages of your website within the text of your website is also critical for proper search engine optimization. Link relevant words and phrases appropriately to other content within your site. Do not simply link the words “click here”.If possible, do not use frames, flash, or action scripting of any kind. Although they may greatly enhance a person’s visual experience on your website, search engines do not “see” these elements, so they do not help the search engine properly identify and rank your site.Submit your site to search engines. You can find where to submit your site on different search engines by going to google.com and searching for “submit my site to [insert search engine name here]”. Submitting to search engines does not dictate to them, when they will actually come by and crawl your site, but it does make them more readily aware of the fact that your website is there for the crawling. This entry was posted on Tuesday, December 11th, 2012 at 12:32 AM and is filed under SEO.
