PPC or pay per click is a means of paid online advertising designed to send traffic and visitors to websites. The definition is in the phrase “pay per click” the website owner running the PPC advertisement is only obligated to pay the search engine or website publisher, when the advertisement is clicked on by a visitor. The most common form of pay per click marketing involves advertisers bidding amounts on relevant keywords that will most likely drive targeted visitors to their websites.
Out of all the different methods of online marketing for a website, PPC is the quickest way to get visitors and customers to your website. Starting off with PPC is also a great way to do testing on your website to see what pages get the most traffic, which ones visitors stay on, and which ones they leave. Since money comes into play with PPC, it is important to focus your PPC ads on quality traffic and not simply the number of visitors.
PPC ads show up in search results typically either at the top before the organic search results, or they will show up in a side bar. There are many factors that determine where your ads will show. Obviously, how much you are willing to pay per click is one factor that contributes to where your PPC ad is placed. There are other factors though, like how well your site is optimized for that keyword, how much traffic you get, how many sales you make, etc. Search engines want to make sure they are sending visitors to quality websites, so the better optimized websites can actually better rankings without paying more.
Parts of a PPC Ad
There are three main parts to a PPC ad, the keywords you are bidding on, the title of the ad, and the description.
Keywords
What keywords you bid on is very important to the success of your ads. The more general you are with your keywords, the more clicks and traffic you will get, but the cost will be higher and the chance of that traffic converting into sales is low. The more specific you are with your keyword bidding, potentially the less traffic you will receive, but your cost will be low and the chance of making a sale is high, because of the qualified nature of the traffic.
Title
The title is going to be the first thing people see on your PPC ad, so it needs to grab their attention. A great way to grab people’s attention is to include keywords in the title of your ad. These keywords will grab people’s attention, because search engines will often bold the keywords in the search results that a person searched for, so when they see the words they typed in bold, it will grab their attention and encourage them to click on the ad. If, for example, you were selling Reebok Zigtech shoes and you wanted to create an ad for them, your title could possibly be something like “Get new Reebok Zigtech shoes”.
Description
The description is very important, because it will play a few roles in encouraging potential buyers to click on your ad. A quality description also helps dissuade casual “window shoppers” from clicking on your ad, costing you money, and leaving. There are a couple of things that should be included in a quality description. The first is a feature, and the second is a benefit. Using the shoes example from above, a feature of the shoes could possibly be “The shoe to better your workout”. Another could potentially be “An energy drink for your feet”. In either example you want to have something that shows how that item is going to benefit the customer in some way. Next, you should highlight the benefit or benefits of the product or service. Some examples would be: “free shipping” or “50% off today only”. These are unique selling points that will grab the attention of potential customers to entice them to click on your PPC ad. Remember, a well emphasized benefit also helps deter casual “window shoppers” from clicking on your ad.
PPC provides a means to delivering high quality, targeted traffic to your website as quickly as possible. Since there is money involved, it is important to focus on the quality of the visitors rather than the quantity. Start with a daily budget you can handle and begin seeing the return on your investment and the increase in visitors to your website.
